About playful self-reflexivity, creative work and fashion...
Big questions are questions of significance and meaning. Each social issue has its own. You can ask them directly risking short-sighted and clunky answers -OR- you can pose them gently, polite and clever. Doing so you're increasing the objective of satisfying answers, which then opens more and more perspectives...
We believe that Matthew Frost has found perfect approaches to those big fellas! We simply love the playful use of self-reflexivity in his films, his subtle attitude to raise questions and how he is pairing them with images full of style and charm... The result: films that shine with a tender sensuality!
There is always a humorous subtext, intriguing concept and catchy punch-line waiting for us!
Working with some of the movie-industry's most exciting and interesting personalities like Kirsten Dunst, Kate Winslet, Cate Blanchett or Jessica Chastain it seems as if he has no fears of contact at all, on the contrary it feels like fears of contact became one of his films motives and engines itself! Enjoy his works of art with us!
But first things first: Let´s have a quick chat with the director himself...
WHAT COMES FIRST CONCEPT OR PROTAGONIST? -in other words- HOW CLOSELY INVOLVED arE your FANTASTIC protagonists IN THE CREATIVE PROCESS?
It really depends on the project. Sometimes if it’s a celebrity then it’s hard to plan a complicated shoot so you keep it simple and that dictates the concept. Other times I’ve been lucky to write an idea and then have great talent come on board!
YOUR FILMS THEMATISE TOPICS LIKE FAME ON THE ONE HAND AND FANDOM ON THE OTHER. WHAT ARE THE MOST REMARKABLE CHANGES IN TERMS OF OUR SOCIAL INTERACTIONS WITH CELEBRITIES FROM YOUR POINT OF VIEW?
Well, I think that what interests me is the blurring of the lines between celebrity and fandom. It seems that it’s more accessible than ever to be recognized and without really needing to have a talent or skill. Everyone has looked at someones Instagram account that has 30-50k followers and wondered - how the F do they have so many followers?!
Who are they? Well that person feels like a celebrity in their own world. They’ve worked hard to get there.
That changes the dynamic as it has created many different levels of celeb/fan interactions. It’s there for the taking and it can mean big business to the point that for the ones that have enough followers it could mean playing in the same playground as actual celebrities and possibly being up for the same jobs… So for a basic fan it can be inciting to try an emulate all of this in one way or another. The awkward attempts are fascinating to witness and very revealing of where we’re at...
HA! Those are classic movies. JLGoddard always zero-ed into exactly what he wanted to get at on each film: That political theme, that feeling, that dynamic he worked quickly and sometimes without a script. He’s a next level artist - But what I particularly like is how he knew that to sell his ideas... He had to sugar coat his images and make them appealing and attractive to the audience, hence the bright colours, the beautiful women and the melodramatic or pop scores.
Today his films have aged so well because of that and it’s no surprise that you see so many of his images so heavily referenced in fashion, social media and advertising but you never get a sense that they’re going deeper into what the films where, they just like the flat cute shoes or the perfect hair cut or the dance to that song...
Goddard is even more of genius because he’s still tricking us into thinking those films are fluff. They’re not! So it’s funny to me to catch these on-the-nose references that still keep being spat out on instagram or fashion films…
Hopefully people will actually watch the films and not just the youtube clip or that cute song with that cute French 60’s accent but I doubt it…
Sorry I just had a coffee! To answer your question: Jean-Claude Belmondo in "Pierrot Le Fou"!
I grew up in the South of France, had a Parrot growing up and my fav colour is blue!
WHAT KIND OF CREATIVE PATTERNS, ROUTINES OR RITUALS DO YOU HAVE? IS THERE ANY SPECIAL PLACE WHERE YOU'RE TOPPING UP YOUR CREATIVE ENERGY?
Not really, I wish I could go to a place and just click in..but that’s the beauty of what I do, I can work anywhere and come up with things in the most random places. It helps me to keep my eyes open to the world around me. Also I can pretty much work from my phone now!
WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES BESIDES MAKING FILMS? COLLECTING THINGS?
I’m a big football fan and follow Arsenal FC and AS Monaco FC. Watching a game is the only thing that truly takes my mind off everything. I still play in China town for the club there Nowhere FC (shout out)
I don’t collect much! Well, yes books...

I like the idea category too. The idea and the concept are everything, it’s essential to push this specific format beyond the stereotypes and reward originality. I look forward to coming back to Berlin soon!
